Assembly, Schematic And Connections

This schematic is of the audio board. It shows the various connections available on the board. All connections, except those for the photocell and power, will be connected to GND through either an external circuit, toggle switch or pushbutton switch.
Assembly Instructions
Basic Playback Board
Required tools
- Soldering iron
- Diaginal cutters
- Wire strippers
- Insert and solder componenets according to the parts list. Start with the lower profile components and work towards the taller ones. Observe polarity on the appropriate components. Trim the leads closely on the solder side of the board. (see the errata sheet for errors and ommissions)
- Insert the sound chip into it's socket at U1. Carefully prebend the chip leads on a table top so that they are perpendicular to the chip body.
- If you have only one board then connect the record switch and audio cable so you can record sounds. You may want to install the terminal blocks for easier connections on a single board used as a recorder. You may also want to install D1 and R4 for a visual acknowledgement of a record sequence.
- Connect your wiring to power and trigger inputs.
Recorder Board
The recorder board is basically a playback unit with a few additional components. The parts list outlines the components needed. It is recommended you install the terminal blocks or other connectors on the wiring to prevent repeated soldering on the pads.

Terminal Connections
- Vin
- +7 to 35 (max) VDC supply input.
- GND
- Ground. These are common connections to be used for power and trigger connections.
- GND
- Ground. These are common connections to be used for power and trigger connections.
- +5
- +5 VDC supply. This can either be an input or output depending upon configuration. If the LM7805 is present then this is an output. +5 and GND must be connected to each downstream board powered from this output. It is recommended that no more than 7 downstream boards be powered from this output.
- Loop
- Connection to +5 provides loop play. Connection to GND provides single play. This connection is for external control. Onboard selection is via J8.
- Record
- Connection to GND initiates a record sequence. Full memory or removal of GND stops recording.
- Cont
- Plays either one complete sequence or loops depending upon configuration (see truth-table). Sequence can be halted by triggering Mom.
- Mom
- Plays as long as the input is active. Stops upon removal of the trigger. (see truth-table)
- Spkr
- Speaker (+) connection. The other connection goes to GND.
- Audio In
- This is the signal lead from your audio source. Input is designed to match headphone outputs. The other connection goes to GND.
- Photocell
- This connection goes to the photocell.
- Photocell
- This connection goes to the photocell.
Jumpers
- J7
- This jumper routes the trigger output from the photocell circuit to either the Cont or Mom inputs. If the photocell circuit is not used then this jumper is not needed. If the photocell circuit is installed but not used then remove the shorting jumper.
- J8
- This jumper dictates whether the audio will play once or loop when triggered through the Cont input. This duplicates the external terminal block Loop
